Over 30 million workers affected by Covid-19 in first half of 2020

According to General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO), the national employment rate has witnessed a dramatic fall due to the Covid-19 pandemic since January 2020.

Of 30.8 million people affected by Covid-19, 28.7 million are employed, 879,000 are unemployed and other 1.2 million do not belong to the labor force.

Employees in the service sector were hardest hit by the pandemic (72%), followed by 67.8% of people working in the industry and construction sector. The figure for agriculture, forestry and fisheries Sector is 25.1%.

In terms of unemployment rate, the figure for working population in the second quarter of 2020 was recorded at 2.73%; In urban areas, the percentage of people in working age who fall victim to unemployment was 4.46%, which is the highest figure during the past 10 years.

It is anticipated that there will be a second wave of Covid-19 pandemic in many countries, which would have negative impacts on Vietnam’s employment situation.

GSO suggested some measures for economic growth, such as building designated support packages for disadvantaged labour groups, implementing policies effectively to support enterprises, understanding the economic demands, meeting the requirement aftermath of the Covid-19.
